Embracing The Dragon
Unveiling The Symbolism Behind The Year Of The Dragon

Chinese New Year – – also known as the Spring Festival – is a major holiday that marks the beginning of a new lunar year. It’s a time filled with cultural traditions, festivities, and symbolism. Each year is represented by an animal from the Chinese zodiac, and in 2024, we will welcome the Year of the Dragon.
Come with us as we embark on a deep dive into the history, customs, and traditions of Chinese New Year celebrations.
Origins of the Chinese Lunar Calendar

According to legend, when Buddha was about to depart from Earth after his teachings, he invited all animals to bid him farewell. Only twelve animals showed up to pay their respects, including a Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
As a reward for their loyalty and attendance, Buddha gave each animal a year on the lunar calendar in order of their arrival. The dragon was the fifth animal to arrive.
Each year is attached to one of the animals on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, and each year is associated with certain “traits” and beliefs.
Importance of Dragons

The dragon holds a significant place in Chinese culture. It is one of the most revered creatures in Chinese folklore and is deeply ingrained in the country's customs, traditions, and way of life.

1. Symbol of Imperial Power
In Chinese culture, the dragon has been associated with the emperors for centuries. The dragon was seen as a symbol of imperial power and was used extensively in clothing, flags, architecture, and even currency during the dynastic rule. Even today, many aspects of traditional Chinese society still carry traces of this association between dragons and imperial power.
2. Guardian Spirits
Dragons are also believed to be powerful guardian spirits that bring protection and good luck. According to legend, dragons guard heavenly palaces or sacred treasures like pearls or jewels. They are also said to protect important places such as temples or tombs where they are often depicted on gates or roofs as guardians against evil spirits.

3. Yin Yang Symbolism
In Chinese philosophy, there is a constant balance between two opposing forces - Yin (darkness) and Yang (light). Dragons embody this concept perfectly as they have both yin (water) qualities like wisdom and calmness along with yang (fire) characteristics like power and energy. This duality of the dragon makes it a symbol of harmony and balance in the universe.
